But whether or not a millionaire wants to live in a multimillion-dollar residence or rent it, demand for luxury real estate is on the rise, especially in urban areas where the penthouse reigns supreme, towering over city skylines. Take a look at the seven most expensive penthouses in the U.S., all offering ample space, luxury amenities, and killer views.
1. Pierre Hotel Penthouse, New York: $125 million
Situated in Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side, the Pierre Hotel Penthouse is the most expensive U.S. penthouse ever registered as purchased. The luxurious penthouse sprawls across the building’s 41st, 42nd, and 43rd floors and includes a number of intricate architectural features, including cathedral windows, 17th century fireplaces, 23-foot-high ceilings, and a grand wooden staircase with 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline, Central Park, and the Hudson River. The opulent residence boasts a total of 16 rooms, including five en suite bedrooms and six bathrooms. There is also ample outdoor living space spread across four exterior terraces. The penthouse also boasts a number of nonconventional opulent amenities, including several $1 million marble statutes and a Swedish sauna that reportedly cost more than $1.5 million to build. There is an ongoing $47,000 monthly maintenance fee for this penthouse, which covers electricity and two housekeeping staff.
2. Sherry Netherland Penthouse, New York: $95 million
This $95 million apartment is situated in Manhattan’s renowned Sherry Netherland complex in New York. The actual complex was built in 1927 and converted into residential suites in the 1950s. The residence has been attracting famous residents, such as Diana Ross and Charlie Ross, over the past 50 years, but it’s the complex’s penthouse that is really the pinnacle of the building. The opulent penthouse residence boasts a luxury library, a spacious terrace, and stunning views of Central Park. However, residents do need pay a $54,000 monthly maintenance fee to keep this apartment in good shape, a fee that covers daily housekeeping, 24-hour concierge, and room service.
3. One57 Penthouse, New York: $90 million
The founder of the One57, Gary Barnett, spent 15 years assembling the One57 hotel, and in May 2012 he sold the One57 top-floor penthouse to a private buyer for just over $90 million. Overlooking Midtown Manhattan, this enormous penthouse has some of the best views in all of New York.
4. Ekaterina Rybolovleva’s Penthouse, New York: $88 million
The only penthouse on our list owned by a woman, Ekaterina Rybolovleva’s penthouse boasts 10 rooms, an extravagant wraparound terrace, and stunning views of the New York skyline. The penthouse was purchased by a then-22-year-old Rybolovleva, daughter of a Russia billionaire, in 2012. This is only Rybolovleva’s part-time residence, however. Her main residence is in Monaco.

The Acqualina Penthouse is situated on Miami’s vibrant coastline and boasts 24-hour private concierge service and general housekeeping. This exclusive piece of real estate takes indoor-outdoor living to the max, blurring the division between exterior and interior. There’s a 25-foot waterfall that drops into a lavish infinity pool that boasts stellar ocean views, a 100-foot outdoor movie screen, and a live green wall full of exotic flora. Good news for prospective buyers: The penthouse is currently under construction but is listed as on the market.
