We all know those three pesky chipmunks, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore. And we know that they can cause havoc, making things difficult for their ever so patient guardian Dave, played by Jason Lee. But did you know that the filming location where the movie takes place is part of a historic property that is located smack in the middle of Hollywood?
Filmed on location, Dave’s home is really part of a small apartment complex known as St. Andrews Bungalow Court. The charming development provides housing for victims of HIV/AIDS.
Originally built in 1919, the first thing to notice about the cottage is it’s charm – set back in it’s own community, hardly looking anything like an LA apartment complex. At first glance, it’s the perfect location for a family movie with a largely child audience.
But this cozy cottage complex wasn’t always this way. According to the Hollywood Community Housing Organization, St. Andrews was scheduled to be demolished after the community had been neglected, seemingly beyond repair. However in 1996, St. Andrews was saved, and now provides housing for “formerly homeless individuals and households living with disabilities”, not to mention a great filming location for some of Hollywood’s biggest block busters.
For a virtual tour of the location, we included photos of the exterior and interior of the cottage. If you can’t make it out to visit the location in person, this is likely the next best thing, as the photos cover the entire interior of Dave’s Los Angeles home and provide a great view of the complex itself.
Alvin and the Chipmunks was released in 2007 by 20th Century Fox, and is available on DVD.
