Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock has become $51 million richer in the past year, earning the top spot in Forbes’ list of Highest-Paid Actresses in 2014. The 50-year-old veteran Hollywood actress edged out Hunger Games lead star Jennifer Lawrence who earned $40 million in the same period. Sandra Bullock now has a net worth of $200 million.
What makes the financial milestone more remarkable is that Sandra Bullock achieved it through movies alone. She starred in two films in 2013, first in the hit comedy movie The Heat during the summer, which earned $230 million at the box office worldwide. She later starred in Alfonso Cuarón’s science fiction epic Gravity. Gravity received universal critical acclaim and earned 10 Oscar nominations at the 86th Academy Awards, winning 7 of them. As of February 25, 2014, Gravity raked in a staggering $716 million worldwide, becoming Sandra Bullock’s most commercially successful movie to date. Although Sandra Bullock lost to Cate Blanchett in the Best Actress sategory, she was the highest earner among fellow nominees by a wide margin. Sandra was paid $20 million right off the bat for her role in Gravity against 15% of the film’s gross earnings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bullock is set to earn at least $70 million from her role in the movie. That total amount is partly bolstered by the ancillary income derived from home-video purchases and rentals attached to the film.
Sandra Bullock was no stranger to Hollywood riches even before Gravity. She rose to prominence for her role in Demolition Man in 1993. The following year, she starred opposite Keanu Reeves in the hit chase thriller Speed, which grossed $350 million worldwide. Since then, she played many other prominent roles in a long succession of high-grossing films, including While You Were Sleeping ($182 million), A Time to Kill ($152.2 million), Miss Congeniality ($212.7 million), Two Weeks Notice ($199 million), Blind Side ($309 million), and The Proposal ($317 million).
Sandra Bullock is not one to rest on her laurels as she is set to star in an upcoming and still-untitled movie detailing the life of Tupperware marketing guru Brownie Wise. The film will be based on Bob Kealing’s non-fiction book Tupperware Unsealed, with The Help director Tate Taylor taking on directorial duties. The rights to the project were acquired by Sony in an intense bidding war among several big studios including Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. It will be Sandra Bullock’s first movie appearance since her critically lauded performance in Gravity.
Rumors have started circulating about the possibility of Sandra Bullock getting on the small screen again after she was seen dining out with television director Michael Morris in March of this year. Additionally, there’s a strong possibility that she will be reprising her role as uptight FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn in a possible sequel to The Heat.
