The Los Angeles native, known for his days as a rapper with N.W.A., has grown to become a successful actor, screenwriter, director, and producer. The movie, which just released a new trailer in preparation for its August release, is being produced by Ice Cube and stars his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., as a young version of Ice Cube.
In an interview with Today, Ice Cube talked about the new film and how proud he is to have his son working alongside him.
“My son. It’s just like a father, you’re just happy when your kids step up and I’m so proud of him,” Ice Cube explained when asked what he was most proud of. “And then I look and it’s the movie about our group and I’m extra proud of that. So I’m proud on a thousand different levels,” he added.
When discussing how N.W.A. managed to be so successful in such a competitive industry, Ice Cube revealed that it was the group’s honesty that separated them from other groups.
“I think we were speaking for a lot of people who felt voiceless,” he stated. “We were being brutally honest. A lot of entertainers at the time would put on a mask and have to put on the goody-too-shoes kind of image to be famous.”
He added that “We just was ourselves and I think there was a whole lot of people that really love and respect that.”
