UPDATE: Daren Metropoulos purchased The Playboy mansion from Hugh Hefner in August 2016. The son of a billionaire responsible for revamping such brands as Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer, Perrier Jouët Champagne and Hostess, paid a reported $100 million for the mansion with the condition that Hefner would remain a resident until he passes away. The property was originally listed for an astounding $200 million.
Hugh Hefner’s Playboy mansion, is based in Los Angeles, CA and includes simulated waterfalls as part of the property’s sprawling features that include a zoo and aviary. It’s a perfect backdrop for the mogul’s exotic taste, aptly naming his home the Playboy Mansion.
According to Hugh Hefner, it is the only property in Los Angeles that has a zoo license (thus the multiple varieties of monkeys and 50 types of exotic birds), but the best-kept secret about the place (at least the one he’ll actually share) is its wine cellar. “The house was built in 1927 during Prohibition, and there is a secret panel that leads to what is now the wine cellar, but it used to be where they stocked the liquor.”
The Playboy mansion was bought in 1971 for $1 million, but is now valued at $54 million. The style has been called Gothic-Tudor.
Many television shows and movies have filmed at the mansion over the years, including Beverly Hills Cop II with Eddie Murphy, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex in the City, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Entourage. It was also the set of The Girls Next Door – a reality TV show on the E! television network about Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends at the time, Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilson. ESPN broadcast live boxing bouts from the large yard in the early 2000s.
Hugh Hefner Playboy Mansion has many unique features, including the famed Grotto – a part of the onsite pool – a wine cellar, zoo and aviary building, game room, screening room, tennis and basketball courts, forests and a large koi pond. There is also an outdoor kitchen for use during events.
